Slang in the Mennonite Language

Today I’m going to discuss a very particular kind of slang. The ridiculous type.

Most languages have words that start out on the fringe but eventually make their way into the common lexicon. For example: cool. Yo dude, that’s cool man.

However, there are always some words or sounds a generation introduces that end up in the gutter. They seem intriguing because of their ridiculousness, but eventually become taboo. I.E: Re-donk-ulous. Fun to say buy kinda cheesy. We’ve moved on.

My mother tongue of Plautdietsch along my peers certainly had a hand in creating a few of our own.

The worst one was:

Ba-doin-oin-oing!

Say it just like it sounds. You look a fool, yes.

It eventually became edgy to do variations thereof. IE:

Spad-ooi-ooi-oing

The most common use was in a situation where the English equivalent “duh!” would be used. It can also symbolize that the person being spoken to said something that isn’t very bright.

To fully experience the words/sounds, I have recorded a few audio clips.

Ready to leave a nasty comment? Gunning to correct me? Do me one solid and read my disclaimer first.

  1. My paternal grandfather was Mennonite. I can’t remember all of the words and phrases he used to use but I remember when something sudden happened- like if something fell- he’d throw up his hands and shout “Krausmeier!” I never knew if this was something he made up or it came from his background. Have you heard it before?

    • I have not but then there are many different Mennonites. Sounds very German (a strong part of the Mennonite background).

  2. This for real

  3. so can I hear what it sounds like?
